Creation of a “mobile field hospital” in Toulouse

Conceived by the Urgent Medical Aid Service SAMU 31 and Cegelec Défense, a mobile hospital has been developed by the Toulouse University Hospital Centre in order to assist in the care of patients affected by Covid-19. This hospital, the only one of its kind in Europe, is being deployed for the first time in Bayonne (south of France).

While many emergency services are beginning to saturate, it could be a quick and effective solution to relieve their congestion. In just twenty minutes, a shelter from a truck can be turned into a mobile field hospital, totally self-sufficient in energy. Once deployed, this 12-metre long structure with a surface area of 66 m2 can accommodate 18 patients, eight of whom are in absolute emergency.

“It is the result of a concept developed with the military, but it is the first version for a Urgent Medical Aid Service, for whom the basic need was speed and agility. We started exchanging in 2019 and the pandemic to accelerate its development.”, explains Gilles Laborde, Director of Cegelec Defense.

“For 18 months, Cegelec engineers, technicians and workers worked with the Urgent Medical Aid Service’s doctors and nurses. We met every two weeks to imagine together the best technical response.” Frédéric Tribet, Business Unit Manager of Cegelec Defense.
