Stuttgart electrifies its bus fleet

Omexom in Germany recently installed charging infrastructure in new bus depots for Stuttgart’s public transport operator, SSB, as part of a project led by Daimler Buses Solutions with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions from buses.

SSB (Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG) has taken a decisive step toward electrifying its urban bus lines. For this project, Daimler Buses Solutions appointed Omexom in Germany to create the charging infrastructure for new bus depots in Gaisburg and Möhringen.

The new Gaisburg depot includes six modular double garages designed for enhanced fire safety. Teams from Omexom installed a charging system capable of powering the MercedesBenz eCitaro buses already in operation. The ultimate aim is to electrify all city-centre bus lines by 2027 and to convert the entire fleet to low-emissions vehicles by 2035, saving 20,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.

The Omexom teams installed the connection to the public network and built a dedicated transformer station on site. With its 4-megawatt power supply, the installation serves 37 chargers in Gaisburg, using automated, WiFi-enabled pantographs. A second station in Möhringen offers 28 additional charging points.

A smart charging management system optimises charging cycles according to operational needs while maximising battery life.
