Renovation of an electrical line

In Finnish Lapland, Kittilän Alueverkko Oy recently selected Omexom to perform the turnkey renovation of some 16 kilometres of 110 kV overhead power lines between Kittilä and Putkijänkä.

All over Europe, power grid operators are investing to modernise their infrastructure in response to increasing demand for electricity and in support of energy transition. In Finland, this strongly growing demand is due in part to the proliferation of data centres and hydrogen production projects.

The Finnish transmission network is already extremely reliable. But national electricity consumption is expected to rise sharply in the coming decades. In anticipation of this increase, Kittilän Alueverkko Oy announced a renovation of the line linking Kittilä and Putkijänkä, entrusting the project to Omexom.

Omexom teams mobilised from the earliest stages of the operation to provide the engineering, design and construction of this strategic infrastructure. This integrated approach ensures continuity between the design work and construction, and accelerates execution times.

The new line will be constructed predominantly within the existing footprint to minimise the need for additional land and preserve the landscape of Finnish Lapland. Designed to resist the harsh climate of Northern Finland, it will be supported by guyed steel poles along the entire route.

Work on the foundations is due to begin in November 2026, with commissioning of the finished infrastructure expected in summer 2027. Once operational, this new infrastructure will reduce losses during the transmission of electricity and increase the network’s transit capacities, helping to supply energy to final consumers more efficiently.
