Fréjus Tunnel – safety enhancements to this major infrastructure

Teams from Mobility are working to improve safety in the Fréjus Tunnel on behalf of SFTRF – Société Française du Tunnel Routier du Fréjus.

The 12.87-kilometre Fréjus road tunnel, built in 1980, passes through the Alps to link France and Italy.

Alongside Sielte S.p.A., Gemmo S.p.A., SINELEC and Clemessy, Mobility is executing a project to enhance safety in the Fréjus Tunnel on behalf of SFTRF – Société Française du Tunnel Routier du Fréjus. The works include the installation of equipment in the tunnel’s new tube and renovation of the first, which opened in 1980, to allow each tube to operate in one direction only.

The consortium is taking responsibility for five of the tunnel’s major systems: high-voltage and mains electricity distribution; lighting in the tunnel and technical premises; road signalling; fire suppression equipment; and climate control and ventilation in the technical premises.

For this two-nation project, which employs both French and Italian companies, the consortium rolled out systems compatible with each country’s standards and requirements.
