Africa’s first 100% digital high-voltage electrical station

Seventy kilometres from Dakar, teams from Omexom in Senegal and Omexom in Morocco have commissioned the first-ever 100% digital 225 kV high-voltage transformer station.

This site in Thiès is part of the “Pôles 2020” project, run jointly by VINCI Energies and the Senegalese national electricity company, Senelec.

Signed in 2018, the contract includes the construction of a transmission grid, and the transformation and distribution of energy. The project includes five transformer stations and 200 km of high-voltage lines (120 km of overhead lines and 80 km underground), plus the rollout of electrification networks for the Tambacounda, Thiès and Dakar regions. It also includes a network and data management component. Dakar’s existing Integrated Database Management System has been updated. A new Tier 3 data centre is under construction.

Full or “100% digital” is a recent technology. Apart from the digital command-and-control system, it includes all optical sensor heads for voltage and current measurement, and optical readers. The implementation of these innovative solutions offers improved staff safety and greater efficiency thanks to remote access. The station was created by Senegalese engineers hailing from the technical university in Dakar (ESP) and the Thiès technical college (EPT).
