Reinforcing and extending Sweden’s transmission network

Omexom has been selected to upgrade the Betåsen and Kolstad substations. The project, part of a major plan to reinforce and expand the Swedish transmission network, is led by Svenska Kraftnät, a public electricity transmission system operator.

Over the past 5 years, Omexom Sweden has built and upgraded about a dozen 400kV substations for the Swedish power grid. In 2022, Svenska Kraftnät appointed Omexom teams to carry out upgrades at two 400kV substations, Betåsen and Kolstad.

Betåsen substation requires a revamp of its technical equipment and control system due to the construction of two new bigger wind farms and a new 130kV station in the region. As part of the project, Omexom is responsible for a new bay of 400kV transformers, a new control unit with local and auxiliary power supply systems, and a new control and measurement system in neighbouring stations. The refurbishment also involves improving protection against unauthorised access to the plant.

The upgrade of the Kolstad substation is vital not only to maintain its high levels of safety but also to ensure power transmission in the grid. Omexom is commissioned to install a new 400kV substation, connect the 400kV lines and decommission the existing 400kV substation, including the control and telecommunications facilities.
